“It was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:

• Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
• Former Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
