The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the fastest time in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who took the title advantage from his teammate by just one point after winning in Mexico City a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, sitting 36 points behind behind Norris, finished in P17 as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he rotated at corner four early in the session. The Japanese lost control over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was lucky to get away with just a slight brush of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner approaching the final bend on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in 19th, just behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were far ahead of the other competitors, with the German's Sauber in third, over half a second slower than the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
